What is ectropion repair?

Ectropion is a condition where the lower eyelid turns outward and away from the eye, exposing the delicate inner surface of the eyelid. This can lead to symptoms such as eye watering, redness, irritation, and dryness, and in severe cases, it can cause damage to the surface of the eye (cornea).

Ectropion repair is a corrective surgical procedure that restores the eyelid to its natural position, protecting the eye and improving both comfort and appearance. At Genesis Clinic, our expert oculoplastic surgeons use tailored techniques to provide long-lasting relief and restore eyelid function.

FAQ?

At Genesis Clinic, we prioritise patient safety and provide clear guidance and support throughout your recovery.

What type of anaesthesia is needed?

Ectropion repair is typically performed under local anaesthesia.  Sedation or general anaesthesia can be provided if needed.  This approach allows for a comfortable, safe, and swift recovery.

What does the surgery involve?

The surgical approach depends on the cause and severity of the ectropion. Common techniques include: Tightening of the lower eyelid through a procedure called a lateral tarsal strip, canthoplasty or Bick’s to support the eyelid and correct sagging. Skin or muscle adjustments if laxity or scarring is contributing to the condition. In cases of scarring or previous surgery, skin or mucous membrane grafts may be needed to support the eyelid. The incision is typically placed at the outer corner of the eyelid and heals well with minimal scarring. Our surgeons aim for a natural look while restoring full eyelid protection for the eye. What is the recovery period?

Ectropion repair is usually done as a day-case procedure, allowing you to go home the same day. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are expected initially and improve over 1–2 weeks. You will be prescribed antibiotic ointment and advised to use lubricating eye drops to support healing. Most patients can return to light activities within a week and resume normal routines shortly after.

Can it be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Ectropion repair can be combined with other eyelid surgeries, such as blepharoplasty, or lesion removal, depending on your needs. Our oculoplastic surgeons will provide a thorough consultation and design a tailored treatment plan.

Should I take any precautions before the surgery?

You should avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, and other blood thinners for 1–2 weeks before surgery if medically safe to do so. Specific herbal supplements need also to be discontinued before surgery. Any changes modifications to your medication will be discussed at your pre-operative consultation with our team.

How long do the results last?

When performed by experienced surgeons, the results of ectropion repair are long-lasting, and in most cases, permanent. The repaired eyelid maintains its natural position and function, greatly improving comfort and eye health.

What are the risks of a ectropion repair?

As with all surgical procedures, there are potential risks, although they are rare in experienced hands: Scarring: Usually minimal and well-hidden. Asymmetry: Minor differences in eyelid height or shape may occur rarely but are generally not noticeable. Infection or bleeding: Rare and treatable. Recurrence of ectropion: Uncommon but can be corrected if needed. Temporary eye irritation or dryness: Managed with drops and ointments during recovery.
