Arterial Disease Assessment

Comprehensive Consultant-Led Testing for Leg Circulation & Vascular Health
Arterial disease (also known as Peripheral Arterial Disease or PAD) occurs when the arteries supplying blood to the legs become narrowed or blocked. This can lead to reduced circulation, discomfort when walking, skin changes, and, in more advanced cases, serious complications.

At Genesis Clinic, Rodney Street, our consultant vascular specialist provides detailed arterial assessments using modern diagnostic tools to evaluate blood flow, identify early disease, and guide effective treatment before symptoms worsen.

What Is Arterial Disease?

Arterial disease develops when fatty deposits build up along the artery walls, restricting blood flow. This most commonly affects:

  • Lower legs

  • Feet

  • Toes

When circulation is reduced, the muscles and skin may not receive enough oxygen, leading to symptoms especially noticeable during walking or exercise.

Symptoms of Arterial Disease

You may benefit from an assessment if you experience:

  • Leg pain or cramping when walking (intermittent claudication)

  • Cold feet or toes

  • Slower wound healing on the legs or feet

  • Pale or shiny skin

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Night-time foot pain that improves when legs are dangled over the bed

Symptoms often appear gradually and may be more noticeable in adults over 50.

Who Is at Risk?

Arterial disease is more common in people with:

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol

  • Smoking history

  • Family history of vascular disease

  • Kidney disease

  • Reduced mobility

  • Age over 40 (especially over 55)

Early assessment is essential to prevent deterioration and support long-term circulatory health.

What Does an Arterial Assessment Include?

Your consultant-led assessment at Genesis Clinic typically involves:

1. Clinical Consultation

A detailed medical history, symptom review, and vascular examination.

2. Ankle–Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI)

A non-invasive test comparing blood pressure in the ankle and arm to assess circulation.

3. Toe–Brachial Index (TBI)

Used when ABPI may be less reliable, particularly in patients with diabetes.

4. Duplex Ultrasound Scan

A high-resolution ultrasound that visualises blood flow and detects narrowing or blockages in the arteries.

5. Personalised Treatment Plan

Your consultant will explain your results and outline the most effective next steps, which may include lifestyle guidance, medication, or referral for advanced vascular treatment if required.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Identifying arterial disease early can:

  • Prevent progression to severe PAD

  • Improve walking distance and mobility

  • Reduce risk of ulceration or limb complications

  • Lower cardiovascular risk (heart attack/stroke)

  • Support long-term vascular health

Early intervention is especially important for individuals with diabetes, which can mask symptoms until later stages.

Treatment Options After Assessment

Depending on your results, your consultant may recommend:

  • Lifestyle changes (walking programme, smoking cessation, weight management)

  • Blood-thinning or cholesterol-lowering medication

  • Diabetes and blood pressure optimisation

  • Compression therapy (if venous disease also present)

  • Referral for angioplasty, stenting or surgical intervention if significant narrowing is detected

Your care remains fully consultant-led throughout.
