What is a brow lift?
A brow lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that elevates a drooping or sagging eyebrow to restore a more youthful, open, and refreshed appearance. A low or heavy brow can create a tired, angry, or sad expression and may also contribute to excess skin over the upper eyelids and to droopy upper lids.
By lifting the brow to a more natural position, this procedure smooths forehead lines, improves the appearance of the upper eyelid, brow continuum and enhances the overall aesthetics of the upper face. At Genesis Clinic, our expert oculoplastic surgeons perform brow lifts with precision and a deep understanding of facial harmony.
Brow Lift FAQs
What type of anaesthesia is needed?
Brow lifts can be performed under local anaesthesia with or without sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the technique used and patient preference. Your surgeon will guide you through the safest and most comfortable option during your consultation.
What does the surgery involve?
There are several types of brow lift procedures, including:
Direct brow lift – An incision is made just above the eyebrow for precise elevation, ideal for patients with heavy brows or asymmetry.
Temporal or lateral trichial or pretrichial brow lift – Targets the outer third of the brow and is often combined with upper blepharoplasty.
Internal Browpexy – This technique is combined with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty and performed through the same upper eyelid incision and aims to support the brow in a higher position for milder cases.
Your surgeon will recommend the most suitable method based on your facial anatomy, degree of brow descent, and aesthetic goals. Fine sutures are used to close the incisions, and dressings may be applied to support the new brow position.
What is the recovery period?
Brow lift is usually a day-case procedure, allowing you to return home the same day. You can expect some swelling, bruising, and a sensation of tightness in the forehead, which gradually improve over 1–2 weeks. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work or social events within 10–14 days.
Pain is typically minimal and well-controlled with simple analgesia. We recommend avoiding strenuous activities for a couple of weeks to aid healing.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
Yes. A brow lift is often combined with upper blepharoplasty. It may also be part of a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan. Our expert oculoplastic surgeons will assess your individual needs and recommend the best combination for optimal results.
Should I take any precautions before the surgery?
You should avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, and other blood thinners for 1–2 weeks before surgery if medically safe to do so.
How long do the results last?
Brow lift results can last 10–15 years or longer, depending on the technique used and your natural ageing process. While ageing continues, the results remain significantly better than if the procedure had not been performed.
What are the risks of a brow lift?
Although generally safe, potential risks include:
Scarring: Usually well-hidden and minimal, but visible scarring is possible with direct approaches.
Bruising and swelling: Temporary and part of the healing process.
Asymmetry: Minor differences in brow position may occur and are usually correctable.
Numbness or tingling: May occur around the forehead or scalp and often resolves with time.
Infection or bleeding: Rare and manageable with appropriate care.
At Genesis Clinic, we prioritise patient safety and provide clear guidance and support throughout your recovery.
