Lower Blepharoplasty (Under-Eye Bags)

What is lower blepharoplasty?

Lower blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the lower eyelids by reducing puffiness, under-eye bags, and excess skin. It aims to rejuvenate the eye area, creating a fresher and more youthful look. This is a common treatment for those who feel that tired-looking eyes are affecting their overall facial appearance and self con.

As we age, the skin loses elasticity and the supporting tissues weaken, often causing the fat pads beneath the eyes to become more prominent. A lower blepharoplasty can reposition or remove this fat, tighten the skin, and smooth out wrinkles.

FAQs

What type of anaesthesia is needed?

Lower blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anaesthesia which helps in quick recovery and minimises risks to general health. Sedation or general anaesthesia can be provided if needed. This will be discussed in detail during your consultation to ensure your comfort and safety.

What does the surgery involve?

After careful assessment and markings, an incision is made just below the lower lash line or inside the eyelid (transconjunctival approach), depending on the needs of the patient. Excess fat is either removed or repositioned to smooth out the contour of the lower eyelid. If there is loose skin, it is carefully trimmed and tightened.

Our expert oculoplastic surgeons tailor the technique to your unique anatomy to ensure a natural and harmonious result. Fine sutures are used to close the incision, and antibiotic ointment is applied to aid healing.

What is the recovery period?

This is a day-case procedure, meaning you can return home the same day. Swelling and bruising are common in the first few days and gradually improve over 1–2 weeks. Most patients return to normal daily activities within 7–10 days. Cold compresses, head elevation, and prescribed ointments will help with healing.

Can it be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Lower blepharoplasty is often combined with upper blepharoplasty, a brow lift, or skin resurfacing treatments to achieve a more complete facial rejuvenation. During your consultation, our surgeons will assess whether combined procedures may benefit your outcome.

Should I take any precautions before the surgery?

You should avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicationsfor 1–2 weeks before surgery if medically safe to do so. Specific herbal supplements need also to be discontinued before surgery. Any modifications to your medication will be discussed at your pre-operative consultation with our team.

How long do the results last?

Results from lower blepharoplasty are typically long-lasting, with many patients enjoying the benefits for 10 years or more. Ageing will continue naturally, but the under-eye area will remain improved compared to if surgery had not been performed.

What are the risks of lower blepharoplasty?

While lower blepharoplasty is safe in the hands of experienced oculoplastic surgeons, like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks:

Scarring: Incisions are placed discreetly and usually heal very well. Visible scarring is rare.

Dry eyes or irritation: Temporary and manageable with lubricating eye drops.

Eyelid tightness or pulled down lower lid (ectropion or retraction): Very rare and can be corrected if needed.

Bruising and swelling: Common and self-limiting.

Infection : Rare, but managed effectively with antibiotics if it occurs.

Bleeding: Small amount of oozing is expected during the first postoperative days. Bleeding behind the eye is a very rare complication that can cause vision loss. A thorough assessment will be performed before you leave the clinic and detailed instructions will be provided for symptoms to look out for.

Our team will provide thorough aftercare instructions and follow-up support to ensure the best possible healing and results.
